b2ap3_thumbnail_jenny-jones-ap_2816228b.jpgBe the best you can be Baron Pierre De Coubertin, founded the modern Olympic movement in 1894, stating that 'The important thing in life is not to triumph, but to compete,' encouraging everyone to compete against themselves. His sentiment is formalised in the Olympic motto which challenges each individual to do and become the very best that they can: 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' (Faster, Higher, Stronger), aiming, through sport, to build bonds across the nations.

I watched the first part of the really good Jeremy Paxman documentary (BBC1, Monday nights) on World War One last week. Produced to commemorate the centenary of the Great War, I thought it was really well put together. The opening instalment portrayed really powerfully the impact of the war on real people’s lives and how the it shaped attitudes and changed life irrevocably.

Not only was there a lot of information which was new to me - did you know that British civilians had actually been fired upon by German warships? Yes, In Hartlepool (many casualties and locals thought that the Germans had actually invaded and landed  on British soil) - but it also highlighted what it must have been like to live through the buildup and outbreak of war ... the worry, the disbelief, suspicions of spies everywhere, false optimism followed by crushing shock at early defeats....

b2ap3_thumbnail_kelleher.pngHere at The Collage Company we are so lucky in that our work is constantly interesting and different - one collage of a wonderful wedding day to remember, another time an incredible holiday of a life time, an amazing sporting achievement or a celebration of someone’s life...no two collages are the same, but all evocative and personal to their owners. However, once in a while, along comes something that really is fascinating and one feels privileged to have been able to share in the family’s memories.

b2ap3_thumbnail_kelleher2.pngSo it was when several large boxes and a heap of tattered old photo albums made their way to Collage Co’s HQ here in Hampshire! Closer inspection revealed an amazing hoard of memorabilia, cuttings, cups and medals all relating to one astonishing man.

How many of you have thought about trying something new for ages and then finally taken the plunge and discovered a massive passion lurking inside you?!!

b2ap3_thumbnail_the-band_20130920-110509_1.jpgLife is often so busy that we put our dreams on the back burner and allow the minutiae of day to day living and working to take up all our spare energy and time while the years tick on so quickly...

Well, my husband has always loved and played music for his own pleasure, mainly Celtic flavour stuff, and is always happy to enliven any gathering with a tune or two. He has long dreamed of making music with others though and just over a  year ago, a chance meeting led to the formation of his band - Head North. With ages ranging from 19 to 63, they are an eclectic bunch but have discovered the deep joy and fun of making music together which has taken his passion to another dimension - they have had SUCH fun!.

Anything and Everything? You can have it all.  Can you collage food? I think so!

b2ap3_thumbnail_sushi.jpgI was eating my supper the other night whilst starting to type this blog and I wasn’t sure what I was going to write about. As I looked at my food it suddenly dawned on me that a collage is anything and everything and that is why they are so wonderful. Let me explain.

I had a quiet evening to myself and so had decadently bought myself my favourite supper of sashimi, seaweed salad, soya beans and other japanese nibbles. I was brought up in Japan as a child and adore their food. Looking down at my collection of small plates of food I realised my supper was a sort of collage on a tray. Little bits of this and that, that come together to make something rather wonderful.

The true definition of collage is “a form of art in which various materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric are arranged and stuck to a backing”. Well my food wasn’t exactly stuck to the tray, and I am replacing fabric and paper with fish and vegetables but it started me thinking about what it is about a collage that is so intriguing.
