b2ap3_thumbnail_jenny-jones-ap_2816228b.jpgBe the best you can be Baron Pierre De Coubertin, founded the modern Olympic movement in 1894, stating that 'The important thing in life is not to triumph, but to compete,' encouraging everyone to compete against themselves. His sentiment is formalised in the Olympic motto which challenges each individual to do and become the very best that they can: 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' (Faster, Higher, Stronger), aiming, through sport, to build bonds across the nations.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Lizzie.jpgThe UK may not be topping the medal tables at Sochi 2014, but let’s face it, we have come a long way over the past 20 years from the days when us Brits merely admired the Winter Olympics from afar and never imagined that we would ever see the Union Jack hoist high and be singing along with the National Anthem with tears in our eyes as I was doing while watching the glorious Lizzie Yarnold receiving her gold medal last week.

b2ap3_thumbnail_oops.jpgThe paucity of medals heading UK-wards in comparison with, say Norway, though does nothing to diminish the massive excitement and thrill of the whole event. From the spectacular opening ceremony, to the thrills and spills up on the hill, the sliders hurtling down the terrifying ice track and the extraordinary precision on the curling rink - I have been glued to the TV and wishing that I had travelled to the Black Sea to witness it in person.

For success or failure aside, the whole ethos of Olympic competition creates an atmosphere like no other to inspire and bind us together in the international community of sport. The dedication, hard-work and perseverance of all the athletes is both inspiring and humbling. They will all, both medal winners and those for whom just taking part has been a life-thrill, return from Sochi with an amazing memory bank that is the Olympic experience.  The spirit of friendship generated can break down barriers which in other circumstances might seem unsurmountable. Let us all hope that this spirit is carried onwards across the world after the Games are ended.

If you have any photos of something which is special to you be it sport, family, travel or any passion that floats your boat ...or should we say slides your sledge!... let The Collage Company transform them into a wonderful bespoke photo collage, a great way of keeping your memories alive.  Just send us your pics, call us on 01420 562208 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Emmy Watt set up ‘The Collage Company’ in 2010 after finding a gap in the digital photographic market. Instead of creating photo books, which end up on the shelf along with long-forgotten photo albums, they wanted to find a way of getting all your favourite photos out on show and still produce a quality product. Taking their marketing and design experience they have taken the traditional collage idea into the 21st century...
